While the bone marrow is responsible for producing red blood cells in adults, in the fetus, the spleen plays a role in this process, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy. As the fetus develops, the spleen gradually loses its ability to produce red blood cells, and this function is taken over entirely by the bone marrow after birth.
